Here you will be able to find the science on how to improve in three physical aspects of boxing. Each section will provide you with the underpinning science behind improving your force, velocity and aerobic endurance.
When looking to improve the overall power of your punch, there’s two things you need to consider. You will need to improve both maximum force production (strength) and rate of force development (RFD) (velocity). As you can see from the equation below, power is the combination of the amount of force you can produce, multiplied by how quickly you can produce said force.
Power = Force x Distance = Force x Velocity
Time
In simpler terms, if you have a lot of max force but not much RFD, then you won’t be able to deliver all that force in a short period of time. On the other hand, if you possess high levels of RFD but not much max force production, then the chances are that you may not be able to deliver that ‘knockout’ blow to your opponent.
